那个从钟楼跌下来的老师是自杀还是他杀？阿蒙这回以高中老师的身份出现在某中学。星期六早晨，艾什顿中学的学生们正在紧张地准备考试，突然听到汽车警报器的轰鸣，扑向窗边，看到他们的英文老师贝丝。兰道趴在钟楼底下的一辆停着的汽车上。看来就像是从钟楼跳下自杀。但校长阿琳。凯瑟蒂不太相信贝丝会自杀，遂找来了阿蒙。阿蒙很快就发现了几个疑点：首先贝丝坠楼时的衣服过于整洁，一点都没有费力爬过钟楼楼顶的痕迹；贝丝作为英文教师，所写的遗书里居然有文法错误……很快阿蒙把目光聚焦到了理科老师德里克。斐尔比身上。尽管他有无懈可击的不在场证据—贝丝坠楼的时候，他正在楼下主持星期六常规考试……
